Is there a way to deconstruct a PDF file to see images distorted by the PDF process?

A friend has sent me a PDF of a recent newsletter he sent out through an organization, and I'm trying to figure out if I know certain people pictured in a group photo in the newsletter, although it looks like the photo dimensions are distorted, which I've encountered before when creating PDFs myself. It's not a big deal, but just for curiosity's sake, I was wondering if there is some way to extract individual elements that have been incorporated into the PDF, in this case a photo, to see how the photo will look without distortion?
